Front Porch
Trey
Charlotte, North Carolina
Signature move: The trick-shot shuffle — all style, then the safest bid on the porch
“I meant to do that.”
Trey can make a deck of cards waterfall, bridge, and fan like a magician’s — he learned it from trick-shot videos before he ever learned what a book was. The first time he sat down at his family’s Charlotte reunion table, he shuffled so pretty the whole porch went quiet. Then he bid three on a hand Cousin Dre swears could have carried six, and the porch has not let him forget it.
That’s Trey right now: all the hardware, none of the nerve. He knows the rules cold. He counts better than he thinks he does. What he doesn’t trust yet is himself, so every bid comes out a size too small, wrapped in a grin and a flourish.
Big Walt has taken him on as a project, mostly by hollering “BID YOUR HAND, YOUTH” at regular intervals. It’s working, slowly. The flash came first. The game is coming.
