Big Walt
Cleveland, Ohio
Signature move: The recount — he has never lost a hand he couldn't relitigate
“Hold on, hold ON. Run that last trick back.”
You hear Big Walt before you see him, and you see him from pretty far off. Everything about the man is at volume: the laugh that rattles windows, the bids announced like ring introductions, the post-hand analysis delivered to the whole block whether the block asked or not.
Walt’s actual game is better than the noise suggests — solid instincts, brave leads, a genuine nose for where the trumps are sleeping. His weakness is exclusively emotional: he cannot, will not, let a close hand go. Every set within two books triggers the recount, a full forensic re-litigation of who played what and whose fault it wasn’t (his).
The fish fry Junebug owes him has been “next weekend” for six years and Walt would honestly rather have the grievance than the fish at this point. It’s the best material he’s got, and Big Walt never wastes good material.
