Quincy

Memphis, Tennessee

Signature move: The vibe check — bids on rhythm, lands on beat more than he should

“The hand's got a melody. I just follow it.”

Quincy plays bass three nights a week on Beale Street, and he’ll tell anyone that bid whist and a rhythm section are the same job: hold the groove, trust your partner, know exactly when to step forward and take your solo. He hums while he plays — always something low and church-adjacent — and regulars have learned the hum changes key right before he runs a hand.

On paper he shouldn’t win as much as he does. He doesn’t count cards so much as feel them, bidding off some internal metronome that a good statistician would flatly refuse to endorse. And yet. The books come home. Junebug calls him proof that the game has a soul; Tommy Rivers, the porch’s other music man, calls him what he wants to be when he grows up.

The Sharks say feel gets you exactly this far and no further. Quincy just smiles and keeps humming. So far, the melody keeps landing.
