Signature move: The closed ledger — you learn what he held when it costs you
“I don't have tells. I have quarterly results.”
Marcus does mergers by day and card tables by night, and he’ll tell you they’re the same job: know the numbers, say nothing, close. He plays in a pressed shirt with his sleeves still buttoned, and in four years nobody at the Atlanta games has once read his hand off his face.
He’s not cold — that’s the funny thing. Away from the cards he’s generous, remembers birthdays, mentors kids at the community center on Saturdays. But when the deal starts, a door shuts somewhere behind his eyes, and everything you say and don’t say goes into the file.
His long game is patience itself. Marcus will lose a small hand on purpose, cheerfully, to learn how you win. Two hands later the invoice arrives. He and Simone — The Auditor — have played exactly three times. All three games are still discussed in hushed tones. Nobody’s calling a fourth. Yet.
