Mo has spent every Sunday of his life at Mother Hazel’s elbow, and it shows. Thirteen years old and he already shuffles like somebody’s uncle, holds his cards low, and repeats his grandmother’s table wisdom with the solemn confidence of a boy quoting scripture. His actual game is exactly what you’d expect: fundamentals far beyond his years, experience far behind them. He knows what the right play is a beat after the right moment has passed. Hazel says that gap closes on its own — “the game teaches timing, I just teach manners.”
The whole family has quietly noticed what Mo pretends not to know: Hazel doesn’t let just anybody sit at her elbow. The last person who got that seat for this many summers was Hazel herself, at her own grandmother’s table. Memphis is patient. Memphis has seen this movie before.
