Blue

Oakland, California

Signature move: The stone face — you learn what he had when he plays it

“Cards talk. I don't.”

Nobody knows Blue’s government name. Nobody’s seen him without the black beanie — summer cookouts included — and nobody has ever gotten a read off his face, which sits in the same calm neutral whether he’s holding a Boston or a burial. He came up through Oakland rec-room games where the table talk was half the sport, and his answer to all of it was to simply opt out. Cards talk. He doesn’t.

What he does instead is count — cleanly, completely, every hand, the kind of count you can set a watch by. Marcus Cole, the only Shark quieter than him, has played Blue maybe forty times; witnesses report the two of them once went an entire game exchanging a combined nine words, four of which were “your deal.”

The beanie, the silence, the count. That’s the whole package. It’s enough. Lady Rae claims she’s found his tell. She won’t say what it is, and Blue, naturally, has offered no comment.
