Signature move: The ruling — table law, decided instantly, no appeals
“At my table? No. Next hand.”
Every family’s game runs on somebody’s authority, and in Charlotte that authority is Auntie Faye. Renege at her table and the ruling comes down before the card lands. Talk across a bid, same. Her kitchen, her law — and because her law is fair, everybody keeps coming back.
Faye’s game is fundamentals in their Sunday clothes. Nothing fancy, nothing wasted, everything in order. She raised her nephew Dre on those fundamentals, mostly by making him re-play his mistakes in front of witnesses, which explains both his solid floor and his need to talk through every hand — the boy learned the game as a spoken-word event.
Her one soft spot is teaching. Sit a beginner at Faye’s table and the courtroom becomes a classroom: rulings come with explanations, sets come with encouragement, and there’s always a plate. Just don’t mistake the warmth for looseness. The law is still the law.
