New Faces, New Tables

Every table has a moment when somebody new walks in and the whole room recalibrates. This update is seven of those moments.

Two new faces at the table. Fair warning. Cadillac Slim rolled in from Detroit with a fedora, a slow exhale, and a whist résumé that goes back to when gas was fifty cents. And Preach — eighteen years of yard whist, home now, teaching the same lesson at every table: play the hand in front of you. Sit down with either of them when you’re ready to earn something.

Two new Sharks. Meech knows exactly what you assume when he sits down, and he’s turned it into a strategy — bid careless against him and find out. Ras Jerome came up on Kingston dominoes and Flatbush stoops, and he will hold the boss card so long you’ll swear it isn’t in the deck.

The twins join the Regulars. Kadeem and Kenya, Third Ward, Houston. They’ve never partnered with anyone but each other and they are not starting now. She talks, he doesn’t, and they both remember everything.

And on the Front Porch: meet Early. Doubles all week at the plant, whist on Sunday. Bids too big, learning too fast. Miss Odessa gave him two summers. She doesn’t say that about just anybody.

The game travels now
